Announcing My Retirement Plans

I write this blog post with mixed emotions.

I just announced my plans to retire at the end of 2016 to spend more time with our daughters' families (including our adorable grandchildren), caring for aging parents and spending more time traveling with my wife Dottie.

When I joined COSI in early 2006, we were struggling while still adapting to our new, larger building, different style of experiences and seemingly remote location.  The first picture of the simple COSI name on a blank wall captures some of the challenges at that time.

Over the last 10 years, working with our team, community leaders and partners, we have strengthened COSI's reputation, financial strength and positive impact.  We have been named the #1 science center in the country by Parent's magazine, we have won an international award for our "Center of Science" model with embedded partners like WOSU and OSU's Labs for Life, and we were chosen to show our best as hosts of the international conference of the Association of Science-Technology Centers in 2012.

With the completion of our 50th year celebration last year we've completely reopened all of COSI, including the Planetarium, and revitalized the experience.  I check that out regularly with my grandchildren.  The second photo captures the fun, excitement and joy at COSI including showing off three of our five good looking grandkids!

Being President and CEO of COSI has been the job of a lifetime and a tremendous privilege. To be able to work with our team members and volunteers, from trustees to teens, has been incredibly rewarding knowing that it was all benefitting the early learner, the family, the student and the teen on a very personal and individual level.

COSI is positioned now as a key partner in the learning framework of our community through strategic partnerships and as an anchor element to the revitalized Scioto River and the rebuilding of Franklinton and the Scioto Peninsula.

I look forward to a productive year ahead with our team, donors and community partners while the Board identifies and hires the next President who will follow the likes of Sandy Hallock, Roy Shafer and Kathy Sullivan as I humbly pass the baton on to the next leader at the end of 2016 who can work to advance COSI in this new time of opportunity.

As the year goes on I'll share some of my favorite moments and memories--there are many!
